Trump suggests it would be ‘appropriate’ for him to discuss to Barr about launching an investigation into Biden

President Trump explained Friday he thinks it would be “appropriate” for him to discuss to Attorney Common William P. Barr about opening an investigation into Joe Biden, the recent entrance-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination.

In an interview with Politico, Trump explained he and Barr hadn’t considered an inquiry into his prospective 2020 opponent — but he did not rule it out, possibly, declaring “certainly it would be an appropriate factor to” focus on with Barr.

“Certainly it is a pretty big problem and we’ll see what comes about,” he instructed the outlet. “I have not spoken to him about it. Would I discuss to him about it? I haven’t thought of that. I necessarily mean, you are asking me a problem I just haven’t believed of.”

The suggestion that Trump would contemplate directing his Justice Department to examine Biden drew condemnation from some legal industry experts, who claimed the concept smacked of an abuse of electrical power.

“Does any individual doubt that this could have catastrophic penalties for democratic and electoral legitimacy?” reported Susan Hennessey, executive editor of Lawfare, on Twitter. “Yet we appear to be hurtling toward this risk with no one, undoubtedly not congressional Republicans, drawing the line.”

Trump’s feedback arrive the 7 days following Barr appeared just before the Senate Judiciary Committee and seemed to stumble about his response to questions from Sen. Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.) about Trump-directed investigations.
