TALK OF THE MORNING
Alabama sure ruffled some feathers:
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) signed a bill into law to ban almost all abortions in the state. https://cnb.cx/2Ho3l93
WHAT TO KNOW:
When abortions are allowed: When the mother’s life is in jeopardy. Cases of rape or incest are not excluded from the abortion ban.
Penalty for an abortion: Women will not be prosecuted for having an illegal abortion in Alabama, but doctors who perform the procedure could face up to 99 years in prison.
When will the law go into effect: At least six months from now, maybe more. Abortion services are still available in Alabama for the time being.
What next: Expect extensive legal battles fighting the new law. Supporters of the bill are hoping the measure will go to the Supreme Court. But some anti-abortion advocates are worried the case is not the best vehicle for pushing back on Roe v. Wade.
What we know about the law and the next steps: https://nyti.ms/2w4dz7W
From other states: States are rushing to either ban abortion or protect it, setting up new court fights. https://nyti.ms/2Jnzi3r
From televangelist and Christian fundamentalist Pat Robertson: “I think Alabama has gone too far,” Robertson said on his TV show “The 700 Club.” He explained: “It’s an extreme law, and they want to challenge Roe vs. Wade, but my humble view is that this is not the case we want to bring to the Supreme Court because I think this one will lose.” https://fxn.ws/2LPosFt
ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL
No more Joebama:
Via The Hill’s Amie Parnes, former Vice President Joe BidenJoe Robinette BidenSanders the latest to voice support for breaking up Facebook Harris knocks Biden on crime bill: ‘It did contribute to mass incarceration in our country’ Poll: Biden leads Trump by double digits in Pennsylvania MORE ties himself closely to former President Barack ObamaBarack Hussein Obama5 steps toward minimizing your cyber risk DOJ seeks to appeal rulings advancing Dems’ Emoluments Clause lawsuit against Trump Fewer graduates are choosing government jobs MORE but is moving to the left of Obama’s policy stances. http://bit.ly/2vZTqA1
A few examples:
Health insurance for immigrants: Biden thinks the U.S. should provide health insurance to undocumented immigrants; Obama did not.
The minimum wage: Biden backs a $15 minimum wage; Obama advocated for $10.
Public health care: Biden supports a public option for health care that would compete with private insurance; Obama decided against that in ObamaCare.
Yeah, but keep in mind…: One could imagine Obama would have supported these measures if he were running in 2019.
IN THE WHITE HOUSE
Happening at 2: 30 p.m. — immigration is back on the front burner:
President Trump is rolling out his new immigration plan during an address from the Rose Garden.
The gist of the new immigration plan: “[It] would create a ‘merit-based’ visa system that gives preference to migrants with coveted job skills instead of relatives of other immigrants. It also calls for new infrastructure at ports of entry to speed up commerce while cracking down on drug and human smuggling.” http://bit.ly/2WN2nZh

What Trump wants to happen: The president wants to speak directly to political leaders to negotiate.
Why Trump is angry: “Trump grew angry last week and over the weekend about what he sees as warlike planning that is getting ahead of his own thinking, said a senior administration official with knowledge of conversations Trump had regarding national security adviser John BoltonJohn Robert BoltonOvernight Defense: Lawmakers on edge over Iran tensions | Questions rise after State pulls personnel from Iraq | Senators demand briefing | House panel advances 0B Pentagon spending bill | Warren offers plan on climate threats to military Trump dismisses reports of infighting over Iran policy Former Pentagon official calls Bolton’s approach to intel community ‘counterproductive’ MORE and Secretary of State Mike PompeoMichael (Mike) Richard PompeoFrustrated GOP senators want answers from Trump on Iran US halts flights to Venezuela The Hill’s 12: 30 Report: Alabama abortion bill revives national debate MORE.”

NOW FOR THE FUN STUFF…
Today is National Barbecue Day.
I’m a little worried about the logistics, but innovation is a beautiful thing:
Burger King has launched a service to deliver food to drivers who are stuck in traffic. https://bloom.bg/2E9dV1t
Where the service will be offered: Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Los Angeles and Shanghai.
How it works: Burger King uses Google’s traffic data to identify areas within a 3-kilometer radius of the restaurant. Then bikers and motor bikers use the customer’s GPS location to deliver the food in traffic. Are we positive this is legal?
More details on how this works: https://bloom.bg/2E9dV1t
And as a follow-up to yesterday’s video of a cat eating an ice cream cone, here’s a video confirming that cats do, in fact, get brain freeze. Wow: http://bit.ly/2JRElsD
